Itzy Muir, born Itzel Catalina Perez, is the eighth child in a family of fifteen. She is a Mexican-American living in Sydney, Australia. Itzy grew up in extreme poverty having started her life in a two bedroom trailer with no running hot water or electricity. Itzy overcame many obstacles to become the first in her family to graduate from college. Thanks to the support provided by various foundations such as the Dell Scholars Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and the Miner Anderson Family Foundation she was able to pursue a higher education. Itzy earned her Bachelor degree in Government and Economics in 2015. She then earned a Master in Public Policy with a Student of the Year Award in 2017.
In April 2023, shortly after Itzy’s second child was born, Itzy had a realisation. She had suppressed her artistic side to achieve what traditional success looks like - degrees, career, salary, marriage, house, and a family. Itzy was flooded with creative thoughts and lyrics that would not let me sleep. Night after night Itzy had to get her already sleep deprived self out of bed to write down these pieces of art. Having now achieved all her goals, Itzy decided to start working on her biggest dream - becoming a singer song-writer. She is currently working on recording her songs in a home studio. Itzy can be found at Open Mics around Sydney. Itzy’s biggest idols include Shania Twain, Kelly Clarkson and Jessica Mauboy.
In addition to her dream of becoming a singer-songwriter, Itzy is also working on completing her book titled Somewhere in Between. She also hopes to open a Mexican restaurant in Sydney because…well try Mexican food in Sydney and you’ll see. And don’t you dare say Mad Mex is Mexican in front of Itzy or her mother!
